영국의 저명한 마르크스주의 역사학자 에릭 홉스봄은 1917년 이집트 알렉산드리아에서 유태계인 영국인 아버지와 오스트리아인 어머니 사이에서 태어났다. 어린 시절 오스트리아를 거쳐 베를린에서 잠시 살았으나 히틀러가 집권하자 영국 런던으로 이주했다. 학창시절부터 이미 마르크스주의자임을 자임했던 그는 공산당원으로 활동하기도 했고, 케임브리지의 킹스 칼리지에서 역사학을 전공한 뒤 1982년 정년퇴임 때까지 런던 대학 버크벡 칼리지에서 강의와 연구에 헌신했다. 현재 영국 학술원과 미국학술원 특별회원이자 뉴욕 신사회조사연구원 교수, 버크벡칼리지 명예교수로 재직하며 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다.
20세기를 대표하는 마르크스주의 역사가이면서도 경직된 이념에서 탈피하여 방대한 지식을 바탕으로 균형 잡힌 시각을 견지하여 자유자의자들이 가장 많이 읽는 마르크주의 저술가로 꼽히고 있다. 그는 정치·경제 분야는 물론 사회·문화·예술 등 현실 삶을 구성하는 제 양상을 총체적으로 다루면서, 시기적으로는 17세기에서 20세기까지를 아우르고, 지역적으로도 제3세계를 포괄하는 방대한 영역에 관심을 나타냈다. 또한 재즈를 저항과 민중의 예술로 보고 재즈 비평가로도 활동했다.
주요 저서로는 역사 3부작 『혁명의 시대』, 『자본의 시대』, 『제국의 시대』를 비롯해서 『극단의 시대』, 『산업과 제국』, 『노동하는 사람들』, 『원초적 반란자들』, 『역사론』 등이 있다.
